Calculating UAE VAT the easy way

Since 1 January 2018, the United Arab Emirates has applied a standard 5% Value Added Tax (VAT) to most goods and services. Whether you're a freelancer, a consultant or a small business, you need to add VAT correctly to what you charge — and sometimes work backwards from a VAT-inclusive price to find the tax portion. This free calculator does both instantly.

To add VAT, enter your net (pre-tax) amount and the tool multiplies it by 5% to show the VAT and the gross total your customer pays. To remove VAT from a price that already includes it, enter the gross figure and the calculator divides by 1.05 to reveal the net amount and the VAT contained within it. The rate is editable, so you can also use it for other jurisdictions or future rate changes.

UAE VAT invoicing requirements

Charging VAT is only half the job — you also have to issue a proper tax invoice. In the UAE, a valid tax invoice must clearly state that it is a "Tax Invoice", show your business name and Tax Registration Number (TRN), identify your customer, carry a unique sequential invoice number and issue date, describe the goods or services, and separately show the net amount, the VAT rate, the VAT amount and the gross total. Getting any of these wrong can cause problems with the Federal Tax Authority and with clients reclaiming input tax.

You must be registered for VAT and hold a TRN before charging it. Registration is mandatory once your taxable supplies exceed the mandatory threshold, and voluntary registration is available below it.

Let Invoex handle VAT for you

Doing this by hand on every invoice is error-prone. With Invoex, you set your tax label and rate once, add your TRN, and every invoice calculates VAT correctly and lays it out exactly as a UAE tax invoice should. You can invoice in AED or any currency, track what clients owe, and pull VAT-ready reports at filing time. Start on a free trial with no card required, or pay once with the lifetime plan.

UAE VAT — FAQ

What is the VAT rate in the UAE?

The standard VAT rate in the UAE is 5%, introduced on 1 January 2018. Some supplies are zero-rated or exempt, but 5% applies to most goods and services.

How do I add 5% VAT to a price?

Multiply the net amount by 0.05 to get the VAT, then add it to the net amount for the gross (VAT-inclusive) total. This calculator does it instantly — just choose 'Add VAT' and enter the amount.

How do I remove VAT from a VAT-inclusive price?

Divide the gross amount by 1.05 to get the net amount; the difference is the VAT. Choose 'Remove VAT' in the calculator and enter the VAT-inclusive figure.

Do I need a TRN to charge VAT?

Yes. Businesses that are registered for VAT in the UAE receive a Tax Registration Number (TRN), which must appear on tax invoices. You must be registered before charging VAT.

What must a UAE VAT invoice include?

A UAE tax invoice must show the words 'Tax Invoice', your name and TRN, the customer's details, a unique invoice number, the date, a description of goods or services, the net amount, the VAT rate and amount, and the gross total.
